In the new study, the authors of the published study in theJournal of Sexual Medicine, found that patients who took Viagra during the first month of treatment and had been told to take it while they were on sildenafil were not able to achieve an erection during intercourse. Dr. Robert N. Kastler, M. D., professor of medicine and director of the Sexual Medicine at University of Southern California’s Department of Medicine, said in thethat it was “important to understand that the effects of Viagra, in contrast to other drugs, may be long-lasting.”
Kastler said that while the study did show that sildenafil “did not increase the frequency of intercourse,” that sexual arousal occurred during the first month of treatment, that the effect could be longer-lasting. The authors also said that if they did not see a significant effect on intercourse, the findings should be interpreted with caution, Kastler said.
Kastler noted that the study does not have the same rigor as a clinical trial, which is used to evaluate the efficacy of treatments for erectile dysfunction.
“We know that the effectiveness of sildenafil is limited when used in the presence of other drugs that are known to affect the blood flow to the penis,” he added. “There is no evidence that sildenafil, in contrast to other drugs, causes sexual dysfunction.
“So we need to take into consideration the long-term safety and effectiveness of Viagra for the patient and the patient’s health,” he said.
The researchers, of the University of California at San Diego School of Medicine, recruited 10 men who had taken sildenafil and had been told they were unable to get or maintain an erection during intercourse, and then took a placebo pill for eight months. The study had four groups: patients who were told they were unable to get or maintain an erection during intercourse (those who did not take the medication for eight months); men who took the drug only, and those who were told they would be able to get an erection again after eight months.
The men were instructed to take the medication for eight weeks, before intercourse, after they had taken the drug for eight months and after they had been told they would be able to get an erection again. After the eight-week period, the patients took the placebo pill for eight months. After eight weeks, the men were again instructed to take the Viagra medication for eight weeks.
Patients who took the Viagra medication for eight weeks, while not taking the placebo pill, had a significantly lower chance of achieving an erection than did patients who took the placebo pill alone.
The authors of the study said that the results are “an important finding,” but they did not state that they intended to publish this result, which is the study’s publication date.
